Ophiopogon japonicus 'Mondo Grass'
A Versatile, Low-Maintenance Groundcover for Borders & Shade
Ophiopogon japonicus, commonly known as Mondo Grass, is one of the most reliable and versatile groundcovers available for Australian gardens. With its dense tufts of dark, strappy leaves, Mondo Grass creates a lush, carpet-like effect that looks great year-round — and it thrives in conditions where many other plants struggle. Whether you're edging garden beds, filling shaded areas under trees, or creating a low-maintenance lawn alternative, Mondo Grass delivers effortless style with minimal care.
- Dense, dark green strappy foliage — creates a lush, carpet-like groundcover
- Excellent shade tolerance — thrives under trees and in low-light areas
- Evergreen — looks great year-round with virtually no maintenance
- Produces small white to pale lilac flowers in summer, followed by dark blue berries
- Grows to approximately 20–30cm tall; spreads slowly to form a dense mat
- Suitable for most well-drained soils; tolerates dry shade once established
- Ideal for borders, edging, mass planting, and lawn alternatives
Supplied as a tube stock plant, ready to establish quickly in the ground. Plant in groups or rows for effective groundcover, use as a neat border along pathways and garden beds, or mass plant under trees for a low-maintenance, year-round display.
Packaging & Postage
We pack up to 70 tube stock plants per standard Australia Post BX5 box. We always stand our tubes upright to minimise soil loss and ensure your plants arrive in the best possible condition.
